The protection of tropical rainforests requires reliable information about environmental conditions, land use and changes in natural landscapes. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related geospatial technologies provide important tools for collecting, organizing and analysing spatial information that can support environmental research and conservation activities.
This article, presented as part of the GIS Business series “Professors and Their Research Fields,” focuses on the work of Jörg Bendix and the use of geospatial approaches in rainforest research. It highlights the relevance of GIS-based methods for understanding environmental processes and documenting changes within rainforest regions. Spatial information can be combined with observations and other geographic datasets to provide a more detailed picture of ecosystems and their surrounding environments.
Particular attention is given to the role of geoinformation in environmental monitoring and the assessment of rainforest landscapes. GIS and remote sensing can support the analysis of vegetation, land-cover changes and spatial patterns, providing researchers with valuable information for studying vulnerable ecosystems.
The article illustrates how research in geoinformatics can contribute to environmental protection by connecting geographic data, scientific analysis and practical conservation challenges. It also demonstrates the broader application of GIS beyond conventional mapping, particularly in the study and protection of natural environments.
