GIS business series: "Professors and their research fields" - Part 6: Site analysis for solar plants. Careers with sunny sides
Keywords:
Solar Energy, GIS, Site Analysis, Renewable Energy, Spatial Analysis, Solar Power PlantsAbstract
The sixth part of the GIS Business series “Professors and Their Research Fields” focuses on the application of geospatial technologies to the analysis and selection of suitable locations for solar power plants. Site selection is an important aspect of solar-energy development because the suitability of a location depends on a range of spatial and environmental factors.
The article examines how GIS can support the identification and evaluation of potential sites for solar installations. Spatial information can be used to analyse geographic conditions and compare different locations according to relevant site-selection criteria. By bringing these factors together within a GIS environment, researchers and planners can obtain a structured basis for evaluating the suitability of areas for solar-energy development.
Particular attention is given to the relationship between geoinformation, renewable-energy planning and spatial analysis. GIS-based approaches can help visualize potential sites, identify spatial constraints and support the comparison of alternative locations. Such methods can contribute to more systematic planning and improve the use of geographic information in renewable-energy projects.
The article also connects solar-site analysis with the professional and research opportunities emerging around renewable energy and geospatial technologies. It illustrates how GIS expertise can be applied to practical environmental and energy-related challenges while demonstrating the broader role of spatial analysis in supporting the transition toward renewable energy.
