Abstract

The Ruhr area is presented as an important region for the development and application of three-dimensional geoinformation technologies. The article “The Ruhr Area Will Become the 3D-Capital of Europe” focuses on the growing use of 3D technologies for representing urban environments and geographic information across the region.

Three-dimensional city models can provide detailed digital representations of buildings, infrastructure and urban landscapes. Compared with conventional two-dimensional maps, these models offer additional possibilities for visualizing complex spatial relationships and supporting the interpretation of urban environments.

The article considers the development of 3D geoinformation within the Ruhr area and its potential applications in urban planning, geographic information systems and the management of spatial data. The creation and use of consistent three-dimensional models can provide a common basis for presenting geographic information and examining urban structures from different perspectives.

The development of 3D technologies also reflects the broader evolution of GIS from traditional mapping toward increasingly detailed digital representations of real-world environments. The Ruhr area's activities in this field illustrate the potential of three-dimensional geoinformation to support planning, visualization and other urban applications.

The article highlights the growing importance of 3D city models and geospatial technologies and presents the Ruhr area as an emerging centre for the development and practical use of three-dimensional geographic information.
