Abstract

The development of three-dimensional navigation represents an important step in the evolution of geospatial information systems and digital navigation technologies. Moving beyond conventional two-dimensional maps, 3D navigation introduces additional spatial information that can improve the representation and understanding of complex environments. Buildings, terrain, roads, infrastructure and other geographic features can be represented as three-dimensional objects, creating a more realistic spatial context for navigation and orientation. This article examines the development of 3D navigation technologies and the challenges that existed before their broader adoption and technological breakthrough. Particular attention is given to the transition from traditional map-based navigation toward increasingly detailed digital representations of real-world environments. The role of geospatial data, digital mapping, spatial visualization and emerging visualization technologies is considered in relation to the development of practical 3D navigation solutions. The article also highlights the importance of accurate spatial data and appropriate visualization methods for creating useful three-dimensional navigation environments. As computing capabilities, digital mapping techniques and geospatial technologies continued to advance, the possibilities for representing and navigating complex spaces became increasingly sophisticated. The development of 3D navigation therefore reflects a broader transformation in the way geographic information can be collected, represented and used. Understanding this development provides useful context for examining later advances in interactive mapping, virtual environments, navigation systems and other applications based on three-dimensional geospatial information.
