Abstract

This article examines the progression of automated driving from partially automated assistance to highly automated, fully automated, and completely autonomous driving. It considers the increasing role of digital information in enabling vehicles to understand their surroundings, determine their position, and respond to road conditions. Accurate positioning, detailed road-network information, sensors, and geospatial data are important components of these developments. The article discusses the different levels of automation and the technological requirements associated with increasingly independent vehicle operation. It highlights the connection between mobility, geoinformation, and digital transportation systems and considers how spatial information can contribute to the development of future driving technologies.
