Abstract

This article presents Luftdaten.info as an example of how real-time particulate matter information can be made available to the public through digital and geospatial technologies. Fine dust and air pollution can vary considerably from one location to another, making spatially detailed information valuable for understanding local environmental conditions. The availability of measurements in near real time allows users to observe changes and compare conditions across different places. The article discusses the role of sensors, data collection, geographic visualization, and public access in creating a more transparent environmental information system. Such approaches can help citizens, researchers, authorities, and other interested groups obtain a better understanding of air quality patterns. At the same time, the usefulness of a public monitoring system depends on the reliability of measurements, appropriate data processing, and clear communication of results. Spatial visualization can make complex environmental information easier to interpret by showing where pollution levels are changing and how different locations compare. The article therefore highlights the connection between sensor-based data collection and GIS-oriented information services. It also illustrates the broader potential of open environmental data for public awareness and informed discussion. Real-time geospatial information can provide an important foundation for observing environmental conditions and supporting further analysis of air quality across urban and other populated areas.
