Abstract

This article examines the potential of smart city projects and the role of digital technologies in improving urban services and decision-making. Smart city initiatives bring together information, communication technologies, sensors, geospatial systems, and data-driven services to address practical urban challenges. Geographic information is particularly important because many city services and infrastructure systems are connected to specific locations. GIS can help authorities understand where services are needed, how infrastructure is distributed, and how different urban processes interact. The article considers the opportunities created by smart city projects and the potential for digital systems to support more efficient, connected, and responsive urban management. Data from transport, utilities, buildings, environmental monitoring, and public services can be combined to create a broader view of the city. This can support planning and help decision-makers evaluate conditions and identify areas for improvement. However, smart city development also requires attention to interoperability, data quality, privacy, security, accessibility, and long-term management. Technology alone does not make a city smart; successful projects need clear objectives and cooperation between authorities, organizations, technology providers, and citizens. The article highlights the potential of integrated digital and geospatial approaches while emphasizing the importance of practical implementation and user needs in the development of future urban environments.
