Channel management in the age of digitization; [Kanalmanagement im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung]

Channel Management, GIS, Digitization, Infrastructure, Water Management, Geospatial Data, Network ManagementAbstract
This article examines channel management in the context of increasing digitization. Water and infrastructure channels require regular information, maintenance and planning, while the availability of digital data is changing how these tasks can be organized. Geographic information systems can bring together spatial records, infrastructure information and operational data to create a clearer view of channel networks and their condition. Digital workflows can improve access to information and support communication between organizations involved in inspection, maintenance and planning. The article considers the challenges and opportunities that arise when established channel-management processes are adapted to a more digital environment. Reliable data are important because decisions about maintenance and infrastructure depend on accurate information about location, condition and surrounding factors. A structured geospatial approach can help reduce information gaps and make relevant records easier to update and share. Digitization can also support more efficient planning by allowing users to work with maps, databases and other information within connected systems. The contribution highlights that successful digital transformation requires more than introducing new software. Data quality, clear processes and cooperation between responsible organizations are equally important. Channel management therefore provides a practical example of how geospatial technologies can contribute to the modernization of infrastructure-related work and improve the basis for long-term planning and maintenance. The transition can therefore be understood as an organizational process as well as a technical one. Clear standards, dependable data and cooperation among stakeholders can determine whether digital tools produce measurable improvements in everyday channel-management activities.
