This article reports on GI_Salzburg22 and its successful relaunch in a relaxed professional atmosphere. Events in the geoinformation sector provide an opportunity for specialists, organizations and users to exchange experiences, present new developments and discuss current challenges. After a period in which professional meetings were affected by changing circumstances, the return of an in-person event offered an important opportunity to rebuild direct communication and professional networks. GI_Salzburg22 is presented as an example of this renewed exchange. The event brought together participants interested in geographic information, digital technologies and practical applications. Such meetings are relevant to the geospatial community because many developments depend on cooperation between technology providers, public institutions, researchers and professional users. In addition to presentations and demonstrations, informal discussions can help identify common needs and encourage future cooperation. The article therefore places the event within the wider development of the geoinformation sector and its continuing digital transformation. A successful relaunch is not only a sign that professional events can return, but also an indication of the value of personal interaction in a field increasingly shaped by digital communication. GI_Salzburg22 demonstrates how regional professional events can contribute to knowledge exchange, networking and the discussion of new directions for geospatial technology and applications. The experience also underlines the continuing value of direct professional contact in a technology-driven industry. Events such as GI_Salzburg22 can create space for practical discussions that are difficult to reproduce fully through online communication and can strengthen regional professional communities.
