Abstract

This article presents OpenGeoResearch as a participatory platform for scientific research questions that have a spatial or geographic dimension. Research in geography and related fields often involves questions that are connected to particular places, regions, environmental conditions, or social processes. A digital platform can provide a common environment in which such questions can be collected, shared, discussed, and developed collaboratively. The article considers the value of participation in spatially related research and the role of geospatial information in connecting researchers with questions from different contexts. By organizing research topics through an accessible digital environment, a platform can make scientific interests more visible and encourage cooperation between people with different backgrounds and areas of expertise. Spatial information can also provide a common reference for comparing questions and identifying relationships between them. The approach highlights the potential of open and participatory systems to complement conventional research structures. At the same time, such platforms require clear information structures, reliable metadata, appropriate moderation, and mechanisms for maintaining data quality. Participation is meaningful only when contributions can be understood and reused by others. The article therefore places emphasis on the combination of openness, spatial context, and scientific organization. OpenGeoResearch illustrates how digital platforms can support a more collaborative approach to spatial research by bringing questions, people, and geographic information together in one environment. Such systems may contribute to knowledge exchange and help develop new research connections across disciplines and locations. The platform can consequently serve as a bridge between individual research interests and a wider community of spatial researchers, provided that openness is supported by clear structures and dependable information.
