Abstract

This article discusses the development of a new geodata portal for Sydney Airport and the role of spatial information in improving airport operations. Airports are complex environments where buildings, runways, taxiways, service areas, transport connections, utilities and operational processes have to work together. A reliable geodata portal can provide a common spatial reference for these different activities and make relevant information easier to access. The article focuses on how geospatial data can support operational planning, asset management, maintenance and coordination between teams. Bringing information together in a central digital environment can reduce the need to search through separate datasets and can make important spatial relationships easier to understand. Interactive maps and location-based information can also help users identify assets, understand their surroundings and support faster decisions. The example of Sydney Airport illustrates the growing importance of digital geospatial infrastructure in large and highly connected facilities. Data quality, consistency and timely updates are particularly important because airport environments change continuously and operational decisions can depend on accurate location information. The portal can therefore be understood as more than a mapping application; it is part of a wider digital workflow that connects people, data and operational processes. The article highlights how modern geodata services can contribute to more efficient airport management and demonstrates the practical value of spatial information in a demanding operational environment. This perspective is also relevant for organizations that are planning long-term digital transformation and need practical information rather than technology in isolation. It shows how geospatial methods can connect operational needs with clearer, evidence-based decisions.
