This article looks back at 40 years of card_1 and its development within the field of digital surveying and geoinformation. Long-term software development in the geospatial sector reflects major changes in data acquisition, processing, visualization and professional workflows. Over several decades, surveying and mapping have moved from predominantly manual and isolated processes toward integrated digital environments. The article uses the history of card_1 to illustrate this broader development and the continuing need for software that supports professional users. Modern geospatial workflows often combine survey measurements, geographic information, three-dimensional data and digital models. Software must therefore manage increasing data volumes while remaining practical for users who depend on accurate and reliable results. The long history of a specialized platform also demonstrates the importance of adapting to changing technologies and user requirements. Compatibility, data exchange and support for new measurement methods are essential as the geospatial industry evolves. The article highlights the relationship between technological progress and professional practice, showing how established tools can develop while maintaining their relevance to users. The 40-year perspective also provides an opportunity to consider how surveying and geoinformation have changed and how current digital trends may influence future workflows. The experience represented by card_1 demonstrates that sustainable technology development depends on continuous adaptation, close contact with users and attention to the practical requirements of spatial data processing. It therefore provides a useful perspective on the evolution of digital geoinformation tools. Looking forward, continued development will depend on the ability to combine established professional knowledge with new digital methods while maintaining data quality, reliability and usability.
