Understanding CityGML and 3D city models; [CityGML und 3D-Stadtmodelle verstehen]

This article introduces CityGML and three-dimensional city models. CityGML provides a structured way to represent urban objects and their properties in a digital city model. Three-dimensional models can support planning, visualisation, analysis and communication by showing buildings and urban spaces in context. Their usefulness depends on consistent data structures, appropriate levels of detail and integration with other spatial datasets. The topic is relevant to city authorities, planners and geospatial professionals working with increasingly digital urban environments. It highlights how standardised 3D city data can improve exchange between systems and support applications beyond traditional two-dimensional mapping.
