This article addresses flood hazard maps and their role in understanding areas exposed to flooding. Hazard mapping can combine terrain, watercourses, rainfall, land use and other relevant information to identify locations that may be affected under specified conditions. GIS supports the integration and visualisation of these datasets, helping planners and emergency services communicate risk. The reliability of a map depends on the quality of input data, the modelling assumptions and the scale of presentation. The topic highlights flood maps as decision-support tools for preparedness, land-use planning and public awareness rather than as substitutes for local expertise.
