This article considers geospatial competence as an important part of civil protection. Emergency management requires an understanding of where people, assets, hazards and response resources are located. GIS can support risk assessment, preparedness, operational coordination and post-event review by bringing relevant information into a common spatial view. Geospatial competence includes more than using software: it also involves understanding data quality, scale, uncertainty and how maps should be interpreted. The topic highlights the value of trained personnel and shared methods for turning geographic information into practical support for public safety and emergency planning.
