Abstract

The article “Planning in Five Dimensions” examines the use of advanced geospatial technologies to support planning processes that go beyond conventional two-dimensional representations. By extending spatial information into three-dimensional and additional planning dimensions, GIS-based approaches can provide a more detailed view of complex urban and geographic environments.

Three-dimensional models can represent buildings, infrastructure and other physical features of an area, while additional information can be linked to these spatial objects to support planning and analysis. Such approaches can help planners examine different aspects of an environment within a common digital framework.

The article highlights the role of Geographic Information Systems in organizing, visualizing and analysing multidimensional spatial information. Combining geographic data with detailed digital models can improve the representation of existing conditions and provide a basis for evaluating different planning situations.

The development of multidimensional planning approaches reflects the broader evolution of geoinformatics from traditional map-based representations toward more comprehensive digital models. The article illustrates how advanced GIS and 3D geospatial technologies can support planning activities where spatial relationships, structures and additional dimensions need to be considered together.
