Abstract

The article “Are the Reference Systems WGS84 and ETRS89 Really the Same?” examines the relationship between two widely used geodetic reference systems: the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84) and the European Terrestrial Reference System 1989 (ETRS89). Both systems are important in modern positioning and geospatial applications, particularly in the context of satellite-based positioning and geographic information systems.

The discussion focuses on the similarities and differences between WGS84 and ETRS89 and considers why the two systems should not simply be treated as identical in every application. Reference systems provide the framework required to define geographic positions consistently, making their characteristics important for accurate surveying, mapping and geospatial data management.

Particular attention is given to the relationship between satellite positioning and terrestrial reference systems. Understanding the reference frame in which coordinates are defined is essential when geographic data from different sources needs to be combined or compared.

The article highlights the importance of selecting and understanding appropriate reference systems when working with precise geospatial information. It provides a geodetic perspective on WGS84 and ETRS89 and discusses the practical relevance of their relationship for positioning, surveying and GIS applications.
