Climate change is increasing the importance of effective risk management strategies for insurers and other financial institutions exposed to weather-related and natural catastrophe risks. Reinsurance plays an important role in this context by allowing insurance companies to transfer part of their potential losses and strengthen their capacity to manage large and unexpected claims. Changes in the frequency, intensity and geographical distribution of climate-related hazards can create significant challenges for traditional approaches to risk assessment and insurance planning.
This article examines the role of reinsurance in the context of climate change, with particular attention to climate-related risks and the financial challenges associated with natural disasters. It considers how reinsurance arrangements can support insurers in managing exposure to potentially severe losses arising from floods, storms, droughts and other climate-related events. The article also discusses the importance of risk assessment, appropriate pricing and reliable information in developing sustainable reinsurance strategies.
As climate-related risks continue to evolve, insurers and reinsurers face the need to adapt their approaches to risk modelling and financial protection. Reinsurance can contribute to the resilience of insurance markets by providing additional capacity and supporting the distribution of catastrophe risks across financial markets. The article highlights the relationship between climate risk and reinsurance and considers the importance of adapting risk-management practices to changing environmental conditions.
