The article “GIS.Business Series, Part 5: Fujitsu – Working in the Cloud” examines the growing role of cloud-based technologies in the field of Geographic Information Systems. Cloud computing provides new possibilities for storing, processing and accessing digital information through network-based infrastructures, creating opportunities for organizations working with large and distributed datasets.
The article focuses on Fujitsu and its involvement in cloud-based working within the broader context of geoinformation technology. Moving selected GIS-related processes and information services into cloud environments can provide organizations with flexible access to computing resources and applications without requiring all processing and storage capabilities to be maintained locally.
Cloud-based approaches can also support collaboration and the sharing of information between users in different locations. For GIS applications, this can be particularly relevant where large amounts of spatial data need to be accessed, processed or delivered through network services.
The article places cloud computing within the continuing development of the GIS industry and highlights how changing information infrastructures are influencing professional geospatial workflows. The transition toward cloud-based environments represents another step in the development of digital geoinformation services and provides new possibilities for managing and accessing spatial information.
