Abstract

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide useful tools for managing and analyzing spatial information associated with railway systems. Railway networks contain extensive geographic and infrastructure data, including railway lines, stations, junctions, bridges, tunnels and related facilities. Integrating this information within a GIS environment can provide a structured framework for storing, displaying and analyzing railway infrastructure.

This article examines the application of GIS to railway systems, with particular attention to the representation and management of railway networks as spatial information. GIS can combine geographic locations with descriptive information about railway infrastructure, allowing different components of a railway system to be viewed and analyzed together. Digital maps can provide an overview of railway routes and facilities, while spatial databases can support the organization and updating of infrastructure-related information.

The use of GIS can also assist railway organizations in examining network relationships, infrastructure locations and transportation patterns. Spatial analysis can provide additional information for planning, maintenance and management activities by allowing railway features to be evaluated in their geographic context. The integration of railway data with GIS therefore offers a practical approach to handling complex transportation information.

The article highlights the role of GIS in supporting railway information management and demonstrates the potential of spatial technologies for improving the organization, visualization and analysis of railway infrastructure and network data.
